Hahoe MASK (National Treasure No.121)

To make this mask, craved wood from the alder tree is covered with Hanji(traditional Korean paper) painted and laquered by very special craftsmen. These masks, made by hand, use the same methods as used for byeolsingut ceremonies at Hahoe village 800 years ago. There are altogether 11 masks of 10 different types : Gaksi(bride), Jung(Buddhist monk), Yangban(aristocrat), Seonbi(scholar), Choraengi(meddler), Imae(the fool), Bune(young woman), Baekjeong(butcher), Halmi(widow) and two Juji mythical lion masks.
